History

The Philippines has a long and attractive history. Before the Spanish arrival in 1521, various states and communities flourished on the islands. Spain ruled the country for more than 300 years, introducing Christianity and Spanish culture. In 1898, the Philippines gained independence from Spanish rule, just shortly after US control. Finally, in 1946, after the end of World War II, the Philippines became a completely independent nation.
